Peripheral Blood
Peripheral blood is made up of red and white blood cells and platelets. The blood cells are able to travel throughout the body in the plasma. Plasma is the liquid substance found in peripheral blood that holds water and various proteins. Erythrocytes, red blood cells, contain hemoglobin and can transport oxygen throughout the body. Leukocytes, white blood cells, play an essential role in the immune system. Lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils are all types of white blood cells that work to protect the body from foreign invaders. Platelets, thrombocytes, work to stop or prevent bleeding by forming blood clots. All these blood cells develop from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs).
Hematopoietic stem cells can differentiate into different blood cell types, and they can divide and develop into lymphoid or myeloid progenitor cells. Lymphoid progenitor cells give rise to Natural Killer (NK) cells, T cells, B cells, and dendritic cells. Myeloid progenitor cells can develop into erythrocytes, platelets, mast cells, eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils, monocytes, dendritic cells, and more.
